Cycladic Islands- Best Times, Getting Here & Getting Around

Share

The Cycladic Islands, a group of over 200 islands in the Aegean Sea, have been a hub of human activity for thousands of years. Their strategic location made them vital stopovers for traders, sailors, and travelers, shaping their rich history and cultural heritage.

Named after the circular formation (kyklos means circle in Greek) around the sacred island of Delos, the Cyclades are admired for their stunning landscapes, distinctive white-washed architecture, and crystal-clear waters. Today, the Cycladic Islands are synonymous with Greek island hopping, and for good reason:  breathtaking beaches, vibrant nightlife, and timeless cultural narratives that weave together ancient myths and modern charm.

The most popular islands, each with its unique character, offer an unforgettable experience each with its own secrets and surprises!

Getting Here

The majority of the islands have airports that cater even to direct international flights. Alternatively, you can fly from the major Greek airports via a domestic flight or by ferry from Athens (Piraeus Port/Rafina/Lavrio) or other nearby islands.

Best Time to Come

This all depends on what you are looking to get out of your trip. Peak seasons are June – August, and off-peak seasons are April—May or September—October.

  • If you are looking for a more relaxed time, then the best time to visit is during the off-peak or shoulder season (April-May or September-October), when the crowds are smaller, and the weather is still warm (September-October is generally warmer, while April-May is still undecided spring). • If you are looking for a more happening time, especially for more party-orientated islands like Mykonos and Ios, the best time to visit is during the peak season (June-August), when the island comes alive with parties and events.

Getting around

Car: The most efficient way to travel around and explore the islands is by car (the safest option) or scooter. Rental arrangements can be made on any island. If you are traveling during the peak season, make sure that you have made plans beforehand.

Taxis: Taxis are available but may not be enough to meet the island’s demands during peak seasons, so waiting times can be extended.

Bus: services are available to popular locations for those on a budget and not in a hurry. Just look for the island’s KTEL bus service to check for times and bus stops.
